If it’s done well and not gimmicky and adds to the viewing experience, I’m for it. Otherwise … no.

The cheesiest use of this that I’ve come across so far is House of Wax, 1953. There’s literally a guy playing with paddleballs for no reason whatsoever.

Geez … I think that there was one of those gimmicks in Monsters Vs. Aliens which I haven’t seen in full but want to, mainly because Hugh Laurie voices a cockroach doctor.

Yeah. His Dark Materials is first up. Then I want to re-read the Hobbit in preparation for the movie, followed by the rest of LoTR. I’ll work on Discworld slowly. Plenty of other books to read first.

Hrm … Discworld is a loooot of books … but overall, I’d guess they’re quick reads … however, I’ve only read The Color of Magic and I have a copy of The Light Fantastic. I’d say start with LoTR and Dark Materials first because they’re 3 books a piece.
